Escritor estadounidense. Asistió a la Universidad de Brown y se encontraba trabajando como gerente de un hotel, en el que ofrecía habitaciones gratis o a muy bajo precio a escritores sin dinero, cuando escribió la novela corta Señorita corazones solitarios (1933), sobre un joven en crisis existencial que escribe una columna de consejo espiritual en un periódico, y cuyos intentos de dar consuelo a sus lectores culminan en una irónica derrota. Nada menos que un millón (1934) satiriza el sueño americano que había popularizado Horatio Alger. Su última novela, El día de la langosta (1939), retrata la brutalidad que se esconde detrás del sueño de Hollywood. Si bien no fue en vida un autor de llegada popular, tras su muerte, acaecida en un accidente automovilístico cuando tenía 37 años, West es considerado actualmente uno de los grandes novelistas estadounidenses.
